Mary is a highly-strung junkie from William Burroughs’ book of the same name. She’s always begging up her ‘connections’ but when she manages to persuade a few of the b boys to give her a ride uptown she manages to miss her connections by minutes and the crew return to the Village empty-handed. An everyday story of junkie life. The song is intended to mirror Mary’s mood - a glamorous depiction of drug life it is not.
