WEARY BLUES

from Not Too Busy To Hate by Hakim Jamal

/

about

Track 9 is the coolest, most laid-back track on the album by Hakim Jamal, 'Not Too Busy To Hate.' Imagine a smoky 1950s Beat Poet club in the Village, as Langston Hughes steps up to the mic to read his poetic version of the Blues as a jazz band plays in the background.

Although the poem was written in 1925, you can find him doing precisely the same thing on American Television vision in the 1950s. I only found this out long after I had made the decision to put the poem to music.

Langston Hughes was known as one of the most prominent and influential figures of the Harlem Renaissance, a rebirth movement of African Americans in the arts during the 1920s. He wrote about the world around him, giving a voice to African Americans during a time of segregation. A man well-worth a tribute.
